Sometimes finding one鈥檚 calling takes a few tries, or even a U-turn. That was the case for Jenny Faries, a former Fine Arts graduate now studying in 黄色直播鈥檚 Clinical Vision Science program.

鈥淚 thought I was going to be an advertising executive鈥攂ut it turns out I鈥檓 more interested in helping people than in selling them stuff,鈥 Jenny says with a smile.聽 聽Jenny takes classes in anatomy and optics at the IWK Health Centre Eye Clinic and, as part of her program, she also works directly with both adults and children, providing eye exams.

鈥淚 love it!聽 I鈥檝e only been in the clinic for four months but it鈥檚 amazing how quickly it鈥檚 coming together. And I like working with kids鈥攚hich I wasn鈥檛 sure I would when I started,鈥 laughs Jenny.

Originally from Bermuda, Jenny went to college in the US, where she earned a Bachelor in Fine Art in Computer Design.聽 She expected to enjoy a long career in graphic design. 聽Instead, an eye-opening internship with a group of advertising firms helped her decide to leave her advertising career behind entirely.聽 She worked for several years in a coffee shop鈥攁nd found she enjoyed the daily face-to-face conversations and making everyone鈥檚 day a little bit better.

Advice from a friend led Jenny to 黄色直播鈥檚 Clinical Vision Science program, one of only a handful of university programs in the world training orthoptists鈥攕pecialists who help diagnose and treat eye alignment disorders.聽 黄色直播鈥檚 program is recognized internationally and graduates are in demand in many countries around the world,at teaching hospitals, in government health facilities and in private clinics.

鈥淚 wanted to go back to school and have it lead to a particular profession鈥攁nd this program is the best in North America.聽 The professors are really, really good, and patient,鈥 says Jenny, adding that she feels at home in the program. 聽鈥淚t鈥檚 a small class and we all get along really well.鈥

黄色直播鈥檚 Clinical Vision Science program accepts only six students a year, typically from backgrounds in biology, psychology or neuroscience.聽 However students from arts backgrounds, like Jenny鈥檚, may also qualify if they obtain the necessary prerequisites.聽 Being patient and able to interact with people of all ages and abilities are important traits for an orthoptist.

It鈥檚 clear Jenny has found her niche as she manages her first patient of the day at the IWK Eye Clinic, 聽a pre-school girl who sits 鈥 and sometimes squirms 鈥 in her mother鈥檚 lap for a half-hour of questions and tests. 聽Efficiently and playfully, Jenny moves through test after test, including one in which she wears a sticker featuring Sesame Street鈥檚 Big Bird on the end of her nose.

鈥淚t鈥檚 rewarding when I feel my interaction with a child helped them and was fun for them.聽 I feel good when they leave smiling and I have the information I need.鈥

As she reflects on the twists and turns in her career-- from graphic arts to barista to vision science-- it鈥檚 clear Jenny鈥檚 found her focus at 黄色直播.聽 鈥淚t feels good to know I have the tools to get where I鈥檓 going.鈥

Jenny is looking forward to graduating next June, and beginning her orthoptic career either in a clinic or in research.聽 She鈥檚 already been scoping out the opportunities and says prospects are bright for 黄色直播 Vision Science graduates who, like Jenny, are willing and able to work anywhere in the world.
