Posted by Kim Hebert on November 13, 2014 in News

The hallways of the School of Nursing were buzzing on November 3 and 4, 2014 as the School - along with Laerdal Canada and Wolter Kluwer Health - held a two-day showcase on simulation learning for health professions.听 It was an opportunity for the School of Nursing to highlight their progress on the Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre (CLSC).听 Approximately forty-five participants from across the Atlantic Provinces and from a variety of organizations and multiple professions - including nursing, medicine, respiratory therapy and para-medicine - were in attendance.

On the first day of the showcase, participants toured the CLSC and heard from expert speakers including:

  • John Gillespie, University of Louisville School of Medicine - "Kentucky on Simulation Sustainability"
  • Kelly Lackie, CDHA - "Interprofessional Team Dynamics"
  • Jodi Orm, Director of Simulation Education, Lake Superior State University, Michigan - "NCLEX Impact and Student Preparation"
  • Sandra Devlin-Cop, Program Coordinator - Clinical Simulation, Humber College School of Health Sciences - "Use of Simulation in Nursing Education."

On day two, attendees got some hands on time with the Laerdal high fidelity patient simulators including 3G SimMan, SimMom (pictured with L-R, Kim Hebert - Nursing, Anne Godden-Webster - Dean's Office and Josh Webb - Medicine), SimNewbie, SimBaby and SimJunior.听 Twenty "SimBabies" were born during the event!

The CLSC also showcased a live demonstration of an interprofessional simulation with student participants Lauren Lumsden (Respiratory Therapy), Basu Shettar and Josh Webb (Medicine), Camille Betts and Maria Chalker (Nursing).听 Following the simulation, Dr. Narendra Vakharia from the IWK and Kelly Lackie from CDHA led a debrief - a critical component of the simulation event which allows partcipants to examine and learn from the experience.

The School of Nursing is delighted with the positive response to the simulation showcase - from participant comments to the palpable excitement and energy evident during this hugely successful event.
