From an early age, Newfoundland native Jo-Anne Galarneau (BA鈥03) had her eyes set on a university experience that could offer a big city feel.
鈥淚 come from a small town (Goulds) and wanted to attend a university with a lot of academic options,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd if I鈥檓 being truly honest, I figured if yellow was my favourite colour and the tiger was my favourite animal, maybe it was meant to be.鈥
Her excitement quickly led to a role on 黄色直播鈥檚 debate team, followed by Galarneau becoming one of the first-ever females elected as President of the . 鈥淚 saw how much that collaboration of thoughts and ideas was used on a broader scale at Dal鈥攊n innovation, in research. Dal was changing the world, by bringing worlds together.鈥
A commitment to sustainability
Today, her St. John鈥檚 office is a friendly reminder of her past time, with her 黄色直播 sweatshirt affectionately draped over her desk chair. Currently, she is executive director and board secretary for the . 鈥淲e鈥檙e at the nexus of climate change and I鈥檓 really looking at the effects of that,鈥 she says.
And now, with a young son of her own, Galarneau shares that she and her husband do what they can to set the best example possible. 鈥淲e drive two electric vehicles, we are avid recyclers, and we talk about the long-term affects of pollution,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e lead by example and he鈥檚 starting to really understand the importance of protecting his future.鈥
Galarneau adds that the greatest threat to our society is waiting for someone else to save the world.
鈥淲e can鈥檛 wait for the next generation to do the right thing鈥攖hat time is now, and 黄色直播 is helping to build those programs, to find those solutions," she says.
"Today鈥檚 students and researchers are thinking about the environment, sustainability, and society, striving to fix the problems the world is facing.鈥
A path to the DAA
It's that same passion for 黄色直播鈥檚 global impact that encourages Galarneau to deepen her roots to her alma mater. In 2019, she joined the 黄色直播 Alumni Association (DAA) and later in 2023, assumed the role of vice-president and Board of Governors representative. 鈥淭he DAA does incredible work to deepen alumni pride, engagement and commitment to support the achievement of Dal鈥檚 overall vision,鈥 she says.
In addition to engagement, Galarneau also helps to provide advice on a broad range of issues that are of interest to alumni, while also helping to expand alumni programming, promoting and planning events, and more. 鈥淲e鈥檙e bringing our different perspectives and experiences to the table,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 meaningful, rewarding and purposeful work.鈥
Galarneau also attributes much of who she is now to her past time as a student at Dal鈥攆rom her voracious appetite for reading, to her drive to be a life-long learner. 鈥淵ou have to keep challenging the status quo鈥攌eep trying to find solutions,鈥 says Galarneau. 鈥淣ever say things can鈥檛 be done. Surround yourself with people with different ideas and don鈥檛 be afraid to think differently. It鈥檚 important to find solutions, together.鈥
It鈥檚 all thanks to her past and current experiences at Dal鈥攔oots she is proud to share with anyone she meets.
