Our accounting major is designed to prepare you for a professional accounting program after graduation. Learn the judgment and technical skills needed for external financial reporting and developing internal information used for management planning and control.

Admission requirements

Minimum admission requirements

To be considered for admission to this program, you must meet minimum academic criteria:

  1. Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
  2. Achievement of the minimum average for your program of choice.
  3. Completion of Grade 12 English (or equivalent course).

Admission to many »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ programs is competitive. This means that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Program-specific admission requirements

Bachelor of Commerce Admission Requirements:

  • Minimum overall average: 75%

  • Academic English 12

  • Academic Math 12

  • Three additional academic subjects

Accounting Major Requirements:

  • An average of B- between COMM 1101 (Intro to Accounting I - Financial) and COMM 1102 (Intro to Accounting II - Managerial) is required in order to major in Accounting.

Program options

Your first two years of this program are dedicated to core commerce courses. In your third and fourth years, you'll choose electives tailored to accounting. The Bachelor of Commerce degree at Dal includes a mandatory co-op program, consisting of three paid work terms.

Past students majoring in accounting have completed their co-ops in the accounting departments of private companies and public accounting firms, with many continuing their employment with the same company upon graduating.

Accounting majors will have the prerequisites and pervasive competencies needed to begin the CPA Canada program. We have a strong tradition of excellence in this area and our instructors are well qualified and dedicated to student success.

Careers

Accounting majors typically start their post-graduation careers in public practice, industry, government, and not-for profit organizations while simultaneously earning their professional accounting designation (CPA).

Many graduates who major in accounting go on to earn their professional accounting designation (CPA), and/or continue their studies in accounting or business administration at the graduate level.Ìý
