Funding & support

Stipends

You will be supported by a standard stipend from the department if you have no external scholarship.

Scholarships

Several government-funded scholarships are available. Should you win a scholarship, the department will top it up so that you receive the standard stipend amount for your year of study. For major scholarships that fund most of the stipend, the department will provide you with an additional $1,000 (MSc) or $2,000 (PhD) to award you for your success.

Tri-Agency

  • Master鈥檚 or CGS M (for MSc, 1 year)
  • You must be Canadian to apply for these awards.

  • Doctoral or CGS D (for PhD, 2 or 3 years)
  • The deadline is typically in the fall with funding starting as early as May of the following year.
  • You must be Canadian to apply for these awards.

  • PhD (up to 3 years)
  • The deadline is typically in the fall with funding starting September of the following year.
  • This competition also considers applicants for Canada Graduate Scholarships.
  • You must be Canadian to apply for these awards.听听听听

  • Masters and PhD (up to 2 years)
  • The deadline is typically in the spring.

Nova Scotia Research and Innovation Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship is open to research graduates at Nova Scotia universities for innovative work aligned with or advancing Nova Scotia priorities (see application form). The objectives of this award are to attract and retain top-quality research graduates, as well as to encourage exploration, discovery, and innovation.

Awards

MNGSS Graduate Research Day Poster Awards

Several awards are given out at the Faculty of Medicine Graduate Research Day, which is typically held in May. For several years, the Medical Neuroscience Graduate Student Society (MNGSS) has funded two awards for the best posters by an MSc and a PhD student, respectively.

Ian Mobbs Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

For outstanding service as a teaching assistant (TA), this award was established by the Medical Neuroscience Graduate Student Society (MNGSS) and funded by an anonymous donor. To be nominated, the faculty member(s) you TA for need to complete an evaluation (sent by the graduate coordinator to all faculty members that supervise TAs). The award is usually announced early in the summer term.

MNGSS Leadership Award

This annual award is for a graduate student who has demonstrated meritorious extra-curricular service within the 黄色直播 community and city of Halifax while a graduate student in the department. You can apply by submitting a summary (CV, letter or narrative statement) to the graduate studies coordinator, typically in April or May. The award is announced in the early summer and is funded by the Medical Neuroscience Graduate Student Society (MNGSS).

McNee Award

This annual award recognizes the achievements of a graduate student, who has been in the department for at least one year, with particular emphasis on research accomplishments. Students must apply.

Application details are typically announced in the late summer (July or August) and require documentation to be submitted to the Graduate Studies Committee. The awardee is usually announced at the Meet & Greet Blitz held early in the academic term (September/October).

The award is funded by a generous gift from the McNee family in memory of Dr. Sidney McNee, a graduate of 黄色直播 Medical School, and Ms. Jeannette Lindsay McNeil.

FGS Travel Grant: FGS provides a travel grant of $500 to help graduate students attend a conference related to their thesis research.

Neuroscience Graduate Program Molly Appeal Fund: MSc students accepted into the Anatomy/Neursoscience program may be eligible for a Molly Appeal Award provided through funds from the .
