International Women’s Day is a reminder to all of us that many things are not one size fits all. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is no exception. In the past PPE has not been designed with women or diverse bodies in mind. PPE can often be the barrier that makes a difference between whether someone becomes injured or not in the workplace. If PPE does not fit well, then there may be an increased risk of an accident or incident. The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) compiled comprehensive information on  to highlight this disparity and raise awareness of the importance of ensuring everyone has access to well-fitted PPE.

Supervisors are responsible for providing folks with PPE needed for the task, but everyone is responsible for ensuring that it fits well. Our bodies naturally change over time, and other life events, such as pregnancy, also have an impact. It’s important to check that PPE is fitting appropriately to keep everyone working and learning safely.
