The Origins of Latin American Heritage Month in Canada

Latin American Heritage Month was officially recognized by the Parliament of Canada on June 21, 2018.

This month, we celebrate the significant contributions of the Latin American community to the country's social, economic, political, and cultural fabric.

Latin American Heritage Month serves as a platform to reflect on the rich history and vibrant heritage that the Latin American community has brought to Canada. Latin Americans have made significant contributions across numerous sectors in Canada, including politics, arts, sciences, and business.

Their rich cultural traditions, music, and cuisine have greatly enriched the Canadian cultural mosaic, showcasing the resilience and diversity of Latin American heritage.

Coming Together to Honour & Celebrate

This month also serves as a reminder of the importance of representation and inclusivity.

The Hispanic Heritage Council and community leaders emphasize the need for broader recognition of all Latin American identities. With an estimated 1.1 million Canadians identifying as Hispanic or Latin American, it鈥檚 crucial to celebrate the diversity within our shared community.

Events, festivals, and educational activities throughout October encourage all Canadians to engage with and appreciate the unique contributions of Latin American culture.

Understanding the Terms: Latino, Latinx, and Hispanic

Latino/a
Refers to people from or with ancestry from Latin America. Primarily used in masculine (Latino) and feminine (Latina) forms, based on gender.

Latinx
A gender-neutral term to include people of Latin American heritage, regardless of gender. Created as an alternative to "Latino" and "Latina" to be more inclusive for non-binary or gender-nonconforming individuals.

Hispanic
Refers to people from Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain. The term is more focused on language and can include people from non-Latin American countries (e.g., Spain). Not all Latin Americans identify as Hispanic, especially if their ancestry is from non-Spanish-speaking areas (e.g., Brazil).

Reflections as We Celebrate Latin American Heritage Month

  • What are you doing to learn more about the intersectional experiences of Latin Americans (within and outside of Canada)?
  • In what ways can you uplift Latin American voices, initiatives and businesses in your community?
  • What does it mean to appreciate (not appropriate) Latin American culture?聽
  • Have you noticed any gaps in representation or inclusion of Latin Americans in your workplace or social circles?
  • How can you help to close these gaps? What steps can you take to honor and celebrate Latin American heritage beyond the month of October?
