Juliana Prestes said she was heartbroken when she saw a video on social media of a man making racist comments during a Moncton rally聽against racism and racist violence聽earlier this month, and she believes聽education is part of the solution.聽

Prestes, a Saint John resident originally from Brazil, said she is working with community groups such as Black Lives Matter, the Black History Society and聽PRUDE Inc., and calling for聽racial ethics and Black history classes to be made part of the聽sentence if a 47-year-old man is convicted for his actions during the protest.聽

Staff Sgt. Patricia Levesque of the Codiac Regional RCMP聽said in a previous interview the man was arrested for inciting hatred聽when the peaceful protest march passed an apartment building at the corner of Gordon and Weldon streets on June 1.聽

Levesque said聽RCMP聽received a complaint following the demonstration from a resident who lives聽along the route, and police will confirm with the Crown prosecutor if charges will be laid聽once the investigation is complete.聽

Cpl. Mike Titus of the Codiac RCMP said on Wednesday there are no new details to release to the public聽about the investigation, and he is unsure of the man's court date or if charges have been laid.
