Sustainable Forest Management

Looking after our forests

Canada holds 10% of the world鈥檚 forests and trees cover almost 80% of Nova Scotia. So, it is not surprising that forest products are incredibly important in our lives. But the values people place on forests go way beyond just timber to things like carbon sequestration and shade for playgrounds.

Simply put, our research involves looking after forests while people continue to use them for a range of human endeavors. We work collaboratively with groups in the private, public and civic sectors to find ways to improve, fix and address the problems they put before us.

Play a role in the sustainability of our forests

Join our team of researchers to effect real change as we work to improve forest sustainability through social and ecological means. Here are just a few examples of the many sustainable forest management research projects you could be involved in:

  • incorporating public values into urban forest management
  • understanding what motivates woodlot owners to deliver wood into the economy
  • optimizing the regulatory environment in the forest-products sector
  • incorporating forest values into landscape and regional planning
  • integrating biodiversity considerations into forest management and planning

Find out what our researchers are working on:

Peter Duinker

Dr. Duinker focuses on the social and ecological dimensions of sustainable forests in both rural and urban settings.聽 He has won numerous awards from forest-management and forest-research organizations for his contributions to forest scholarship both at home and abroad.

Karen Beazley

Dr. Beazley concentrates on biodiversity conservation aspects of sustainable forest management. She has worked with forest companies to identify areas of high biodiversity conservation value on managed lands.
