Imhotep's Legacy Academy offers university students an opportunity to complement their studies and augment their finances through summer research scholarships or through summer employment.
ILA has partnered with »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥â€™s Faculty of Computer Science, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Health, and Faculty of Science to create Summer Student Research Scholarships for African Canadians pursuing an undergraduate degree in computer science, dentistry, engineering, health, or science, at any post-secondary university in Nova Scotia. The scholarships, valued at $6,500 each, are tenable at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ and are paid-out over the summer months (May – August) to support university students as they conduct specialized research in their chosen field under the guidance of a »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ faculty member whose primary appointment is in the Faculty of Computer Science, the Faculty of Dentistry, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Health, or the Faculty of Science.
Preference is given to applicants who have participated in, or who intend to participate in Imhotep’s Legacy Academy and selection is based on a consideration of academic performance, research ability, and leadership/community involvement. Also, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required at the time of application.
ILA has also partnered with the Faculty of Medicine to create Summer Research Studentships valued at $5,000. The Summer Student Research Program for Non-Medical Students was created to increase the number of African Nova Scotians in medicine by providing medically-related research experience. Students will gain valuable experience in the design, execution, and evaluation of research studies, which will aid and inspire them as they pursue careers in medicine, allied health professions and/or research.
The following factors are considered in assessing each application:
may be found in the Academic Research Programs section of the Faculty of Medicine’s Medical Research Development Office website.
Summer Program Researcher/Developer positions provide post-secondary students with skills-building and community-development tools. During the summer months, successful candidates will work closely with the ILA Program Management Team to prepare the program for the upcoming year. Both co-op and non-co-op student candidates are considered for summer employment positions.
