Visiting Students

Letter of Permission

We consider applications from students in other Canadian law schools who wish to visit our faculty for one or two semesters on a Letter of Permission. The number of applicants accepted is limited to ensure that our class sizes are not significantly altered.

Application Deadline
Complete applications for Letter of Permission students are due May 20th of each year.

Admission Requirements
A complete application will include:

  • Submission of the Online Application Form
    • New Online Applcation Form to open October 1st, 2024.
  • Payment of the non-refundable application fee ($70). Your application will not be reviewed until payment is received.
  • Submit the following Supporting Documents:
    • Your academic transcripts from law school and all post-secondary studies (transcripts in languages other than English must be accompanied by a notarized English translation). Unofficial copies will not be accepted.
    • Your official transcript must be sent directly to our office by the issuing institution, or the transcript service approved by the institution. Please send your transcripts by email to: law.admissions@dal.ca or admissions@dal.ca.
    • Two academic reference letters, at least one of which must be from a law professor. Referees must send the references directly to the Associate Dean鈥檚 Office and must provide the reference on their official letterhead.
    • A formal Letter of Permission from your law school outlining their requirements for your study while here and indicating you have permission to attend 黄色直播 as a visiting student. 
    • Personal Statement and Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Occasional Student

Application deadline

Applications must be submitted by June 1 for classes starting in September or October 1 for classes starting in January of each year.

  • Submission of the Online Application Form
    • New Online Applcation Form to open October 1st, 2024.
    • For applications for the Winter 2025 term, please contact the admissions office at law.admissions@dal.ca for assistance.

Subject to 黄色直播 and Schulich School of Law regulations, a professional in law or a related field may be admitted as an occasional student to attend one or two classes maximum.

  • Attendance or performance in classes or any examinations is not credited for degree qualifications.
  • As a general rule, occasional students are not permitted to attend first-year law classes.
  • Those wishing to be admitted as an occasional student should apply to the Law School Studies Committee by email or in writing. Send your application to law.admissions@dal.ca (preferred) or to our mailing address.
  • Undergraduate students may not take courses at the law school.
  • Graduate students may, in certain circumstances, be permitted by the Faculty of Law to take a law course. Those interested should email law.admissions@dal.ca

Law Certification Programs

National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) - Applicants

We consider a limited number of applicants with international law degrees who wish to fulfill requirements of the (NCA). 

  • Candidates whose native language is other than English will be required to pass an English language proficiency test (TOEFL, 92 or higher) (IELTS 7.5 or higher).

  • Submission of the Online Application Form
    • New Online Applcation Form to open October 1st, 2024.
  • Payment of the non-refundable application fee ($70). Your application will not be reviewed until payment is received.
  • Submit the following supporting documents:

    • Your most recent NCA Examination Summary Report.

Please note that we do not offer a course in Foundations of Canadian Law (often required by the NCA).
