Dal Health Achievements ‑ May 2018

Congratulations to our faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends on their recent achievements:

  • Melanie Keats and Scott Grandy, School of Health and Human Performance - Kinesiology Division, won $50,000 in the Dragon's Den competion held as part of the NSHA Central Zone Perioperative Day. They sucessfully pitched "ACCESS: Activating Cancer Communities through an Exercise Strategy for Survivors" - a program that promotes exercise for cancer survivors.
  • Nursing's Martha Paynter (PhD student), Megan Aston (Professor) and Brianna Richardson (PhD student) were all recognized at the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) Annual Awards on May 10, 2018. Martha received the Rising Star and Health Advocacy Awards, Megan received the Excellence in Nursing Research Award and Brianna received the Rising Star Award.
  • Nursing's Martha Paynter has also recieved a number of other prestigious awards and scholarships in recent months, including:
  • Nursing's Erna Snelgrove-Clarke received the Canadian Association of Perinatal and Women's Health Nurses (CAPWHN) Excellence in Leadership Award. This award honours a CAPWHN member who has demonstrated excellence in leadership in the care of women, newborns and families.
  • Ingrid Waldron from the School of Nursing recently published - a book that explores the issue of environmental injustice against marginalized communities in Nova Scotia.
  • PhD Nursing student Sydney Breneol received the Killam Predoctoral Scholarship.
  • A group of students and faculty from the School of Occupational Therapy are attending the WFOT World Congress in Johannesburg, South Africa from May 21 - 25, 2018.
  • Students in the PhD in Health program have had a great year for scholarships and funding:
    • Phillip JoyÌýhas been awarded not only the CIHR Banting and Best Doctoral award, but also a CIHR Hacking the Knowledge Gap Award for Innovative Thinking to Support LGBTQI2S Health and Wellness. Phillip will be spending the summer studying in Stockholm with the support of the CIHR Michael Smith Study Award.
    • Justine DolÌýhas been awarded a Killam Predoctoral Award and President's Award.
    • Bonita SquiresÌý²¹²Ô»åÌýMargaret AmosÌýhave both been awarded the SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombadier CGS Doctoral Scholarships.
    • Chantele Joordens has been awarded a NS Graduate Scholarship.
