Description
The »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ Research Excellence Scholarship was established in 2024 to attract and support new »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ PhD students with exceptional leadership and research potential. Award recipients represent »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥â€™s emerging leaders, with significant regional, national or international impacts expected from their research.
Award details, value and conditions
PhD students may hold this scholarship for up to 48 months, but not past the end of their fourth year in program. The time in program for the purpose of funding eligibility for students transferring from a master’s to a PhD without completing their master’s is based on the effective transfer date. If you wish to be considered for this award, you must apply for a doctoral scholarship before officially transferring into the doctoral program.
This award is valued at $35,000/year and will include funding from a combination of sources. The specific sources of funding will be communicated to successful applicants by the department following acceptance of the award.
Recipients who later apply to and receive additional major awards (e.g. Tri-agency Doctoral Awards, Scotia Scholar) will have those external awards topped up a maximum of $40,000/year ($13,333/term), after which the Research Excellence Scholarship will become honorary. Scholarship recipients may also receive additional funding beyond the award value through stipends or other sources negotiated with their supervisor/program of study. Â
Eligibility criteria:
- You must have an intent to start (enroll in or transfer to) a PhD program at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ in January, May or September of 2025 or January of 2026.
- Admission into a PhD program is not required prior to applying for this award. However, scholarship funds will only be administered to successful applicants after they are admitted to and registered in their intended program of study.Â
To maintain eligibility to hold this award, recipients must apply to additional major funding competitions for which they are eligible within the first two years of starting their PhD Program. These include the Research NS Scotia Scholar, Tri-Agency CGS-D and/or Vanier competitions. While not an eligibility requirement, you are strongly encouraged to complete the Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarship Priority Area Justification as part of your harmonized scholarship application. This will allow for your application to be considered for a broader range of awards.
Application overview
Applications are submitted through the Harmonized Scholarship Process. Your department will review your application and nominate you for an award if you meet the appropriate criteria.Â
