“Estudio de la cortesÃa verbal en las peticiones del español limeño y cusqueño, New York/Frankfurt: Peter Lang, 2018
This book presents and examines norms and strategies in the speech act of requests in Lima and Cusco Spanish. In the theoretical framework, theoretical concepts of Pragmatics, speech acts and verbal courtesy are developed. The methodological procedure involved 100 people from Cusco and Lima and handling three data collection instruments: questionnaires to complete the speech, role-playing games and verbal reports. The final results indicate different strategies to deal with insecurity when requesting. The author explains why these strategies are part of courtesy of doubt, typical of Peruvian society, and that the possible interpretations are: a climate of informality and distrust already recognized in the interlocutor. Then the listener must be convinced that what is said is true. Another possible interpretation is the insecurity and social uncertainty due to the cultural conflict between Creoles and indigenous people worsened by internal migration and terrorism.
