ArchitekÌýPercussion: making a business out ofÌýobject-based music.

You thought books were just for reading? Come see howÌýArchitekÌýPercussion uses them as instruments and uses object-based music as a tool for creative identity and career longevity in contemporary music.

The first part of this masterclass uses various pieces fromÌýArchitek’sÌýrepertoire to explore the challenges and rewards in commissioning and premiering works that use everyday objects as sound producing devices.ÌýComposition students can investigate notation strategies, while allÌýattendees learn aboutÌýexploring the musical in everyday objects. Brave participants can attempt to sight read several passages of object-based music originally composed forÌýArchitek.

The second section centers around professional development for enterprising young performers. Topics include the artistic grants landscape, project development, and developing a unique artistic identity.

The Montreal-based quartet Architek Percussion creates musical experiences that entertain, captivate, and challenge audiences, often simultaneously. Founded in 2012 by graduates of McGill University,ÌýArchitekÌýquickly established itself as equally comfortable in performing classic repertoire and exploring new terrain through commissions and premieres.ÌýPerforming regularlyÌýinÌýtheir home base of Montreal, across Canada, and internationally,ÌýArchitekÌýhas commissioned and/or premiered over 60Ìýnew works, undertaken 10 tours, and appeared on 8 commercially released albums. TheirÌýdiverse repertoire is presented in a manner inspired by the quartet’s belief that given proper context, every audience member should feel welcomed and included through the performance of contemporary art music.ÌýArchitekÌýPercussion uses Vic Firth sticks and mallets on Sabian cymbals and Yamaha instruments.
