Funding

Students at the School of Planning are eligible for a number of scholarships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships. These will be posted here as they become available. Most of these descriptions include links to external websites, so make sure that you follow up on them to find out about eligibility, deadlines and other critical information.

Undergraduate Scholarships

黄色直播 Impact Awards

黄色直播 students are known for their academic excellence, but their achievements outside of the classroom are equally impressive. The 黄色直播 IMPACT Awards is an annual event hosted by the DSU in collaboration with 黄色直播, to recognize outstanding individuals and student groups that impact our community. Individual award categories include Academic LifeStudent Life and Community Service, and Residence Life

Canadian Institute of Planners Scholarships

CIP offers the following scholarships for Bachelors students: CIP President's Scholarship ($6,000), Wayne Daniel Smith Scholarship ($4,500), College of Fellows Travel Scholarship ($4,000), Thomas Adams Scholarship ($3,000), David Palubeski Bursary ($3,000), The Ted Fobert and Robert Tennant Planning Merit Bursary.

W. Andrew MacKay Alumni Scholarship

This scholarship provides an award for a returning undergraduate 黄色直播 student registered in the Faculty of Architecture & Planning, Arts & Social Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Health Professions, Management, or Science, or the Dental Hygiene program. Jill Grant Entrance Scholarship

Dr. Jill Grant retired in 2017, after almost 40 years of outstanding service to teaching and scholarship in planning. Jill is an internationally regarded planner, who has always  challenged us to critically examine the links between planning theory and practice. She is also prolific scholar and writer, whose insights on social planning have helped shape the way we create healthier and more equitable communities. But perhaps most importantly, Jill is a caring mentor, who sent her students into the workforce as critical and creative thinkers, armed with knowledge, confidence and her passion for excellence.

To honour her commitment to our profession and to her students, we鈥檙e establishing the . This award will give recipients the financial breathing room to learn and excel and will make the School of Planning an more attractive option for the top students from across the country.

Lezlie Oler Prize in Community & Environmental Design

In the fall of 2007, Dr. David Zitner generously expressed his appreciation for Lezlie Oler's design ideas by endowing 黄色直播 with funds for the Lezlie Oler Prize in Community and Environmental Design. The purpose of the Lezlie Oler Prize is to encourage students to generate design ideas which are interesting, attractive, cost-effective, and practical for beautifying the city and increasing the public profile of issues related to urban beautification in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).  

TERMS OF REFERENCE:

  • Applicants must identify a place in HRM where a modest design intervention would greatly enhance the aesthetic quality of urban public space.
  • Eligible applicants are students currently registered in 黄色直播's Faculty of Architecture and Planning, in either the 4th year of the BCD Honours program or 1st or 2nd year of the Master of Architecture program or Master of Planning program.
  • The prize will be awarded to the student that uses modest means to modify a space that promotes a sense of community.
  • Where possible, the Lezlie Oler Prize in Community and Environmental Design, will be an in-course discussion topic.
  • The recipient must prepare a 4-page proof of concept booklet鈥攊n digital format, preferably a .pdf file鈥攖hat illustrates their idea and recommendations for implementation. When possible, the winning concept booklet will be distributed to HRM decision makers.
  • Applications should be received in the Dean's Office (Dean.AP@dal.ca) no later than 5 pm on April 14, 2022. 
  • Applicants grant the University permission to post their proposals on a public website aimed at fostering further dissemination and discussion.

Applications will be assessed by the Faculty鈥檚 Awards Committee in consultation with Ms. Lezlie Oler or her representative. The winning entry will be awarded $1500.

International Making Cities Livable Conference attendance scholarships

A limited number of Student Scholarships for Ph.D. students, and Volunteer Positions for Graduate students are available. Both positions waive the student registration fee.

This Conference will be a landmark event, with an unprecedented gathering of world-renowned experts in planning, urban design, public health, architecture, social sciences, and allied fields. Please see the website for more details:  

Scholarships waive the registration fee. They do not offer funds towards expenses. Scholarships and Volunteer positions are not available for junior presenters.

Volunteers can attend all the sessions they choose. Most responsibilities are in helping set up and run registration on Monday, May 14 and following days; monitoring entrance to conference sessions and events; and helping to man the publications table. Volunteer positions offer great access to speakers and exhibitors.

Volunteers need to be at the conference location on Monday morning, to help set up, review the detailed program for the sessions they wish to see, and sign up for helping as their schedule permits.

We are also looking for a volunteer to act as conference photographer, recording informal social events, keynote speakers, tours and special events.

Interested students should send their resume, a short statement (250 words) why the conference is of interest to them, and to which program they are applying (Scholarship or Volunteer) before March 1 to suzanne.lennard@livablecities.org.

Dr. Terashima: Research Assistantship, 鈥淪patial Accessibility to Multitude of Services and Amenities as indicators of health-promoting opportunity structures in communities (SAMoSA Study)鈥

Dr. Mikiko Terashima is offering a scholarship for an incoming MPS student. The successful applicant will be admitted to 黄色直播 School of Planning as a Master of Planning Studies student, and will conduct research as a team member of the project entitled 鈥淪patial Accessibility to Multitude of Services and Amenities as indicators of health-promoting opportunity structures in communities (SAMoSA Study)鈥. The student is expected to produce her/his Master鈥檚 thesis on a topic related to this project. For more details click .
