Hollis W. Duffett

Hollis William Duffett was a well known and respected producer in Newfoundland's Agricultural Industry for many years.

He took over-his father's grocery business in St. John's in 1949. Shortly afterwards he started an egggrading facility. By the late 50's he had started a layer operation in Portugal Cove, a small community near St. John's.

By the mid 60's his farm operation had expanded to include hogs and he and his family moved permanently to Portugal Cove.

Mr. Duffett was well known for his leadership skills throughout the agricultural industry. He assisted with the formation of the Newfoundland Egg Marketing Board in 1971 and later served as Chairman. He was an active member of the Board until 1990. He was actively involved in other producer organizations, including the Newfoundland Swine Producers' Association and the Newfoundland Federation of Agriculture. He was also a member of the Board of Directors' of Farm Products in the early 70's.

Nationally he was President of the Canadian Egg Producers Council and a Director for Newfoundland with the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency. In partnership with his sons they operated one of the largest hog operations in the Province. In the late 80's they acquired a dairy farm which is still operated by the family.

Mr. Duffett was an active member of several community organizations, including the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners Club.

Mr. Duffett will long be remembered for his ability to speak directly on the issues affecting the egg and hog industries, both locally and on a national basis. He was never afraid to challenge government policy.

Nominated by the Newfoundland Egg Marketing Board, it is an honour to induct Hollis William Duffett into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame.
