Dr. Francis was the first African Nova Scotian and second woman to be appointed Lieutenant Governor for Nova Scotia. She is currently appointed to the Faculty of Management, School of Public Administration as the first Distinguished Public Service Fellow. |

»ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ is a research university and a member of the top 15 research intensive universities in Canada. Hear how we got there and where we want to go. The presentation will include an overview of several significant research initiatives currently underway at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ including the Ocean Tracking Network (OTN). A senior researcher from OTN will talk about building a global network to electronically tag and track the movements of fish and other aquatic animals, and how the results impact resource management in Canada and the world.

As we endeavour to fulfill our mandate to support our professional and managerial staff, we must reflect on the systems that we currently have in place at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥, on the various ways that people learn and grown and on our role as an institution to enable career development. Please join us for an interactive workshop where we will explore our strengths, our weaknesses and the role of individual agency in professional development at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥.

It is sometimes difficult to see how activities at the operational level relate to strategic priorities, and even more difficult to determine if and when operational results are having a measurable impact on those priorities. Best Value Business Model tools are one way to help gain a more comprehensive perspective. Learn how we are applying the tools and principles of the Best Value Business Model to collect data from operational level projects and activities to report on departmental and strategic initiatives. The results can provide significant opportunities for integration of strategic and operational objectives and help focus operational improvements that align with strategic direction.

Participants will gain an understanding of our student demographics: who they are, what they want, what they need; and be introduced to the front line experience of Student Affairs professionals, with facilitators sharing best practices and keys to student success. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore cultural competency as it relates to their day-to-day work.

This presentation highlights key sustainability concepts, outlines key university strategies, and provides ideas of putting concepts into practice at work and home. Resources will be highlighted that can be used after the session.
»ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ the presenter: Rochelle Owen, Director, Office of Sustainability, has worked in the environment and sustainability field for over 25 years at non-profit, government, and academic institutions. She currently works as the Director of the Office of Sustainability at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥. Rochelle uses facilitation, community development, program management, and analytical skills to design programs and involve people in sustainability issues. Rochelle holds a BSc in community health, a Masters in Environmental Studies, and is a LEED Green Associate. She writes sustainability columns for newspapers and magazines. |

1:25 to 2:15 p.m.-Workshop 2: Understanding Student Success and Retention at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ – Strategic Priority 1.1
Much time and attention has been put into understanding how students are retained, and the key components of student success. As part of Strategic Priority 1.1, »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ is committed to increasing the retention and degree completion of our students. This session will focus on high impact retention and student success strategies, discuss how staff can contribute to this priority, as well as provide an overview of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ specific data and initiatives.

1:25 to 2:15 p.m.-Workshop 2: Time Management and Stress Relief
The world we live in is extremely fast-paced and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. This time management and stress relief session is designed to help you manage and prioritize your life in a way that will allow you to be effective and enjoy life at the same time. Using techniques based on military effectiveness, corporate performance, and ancient practices, this workshop will add benefits at work and at home. Note: this session was previously offered to DPMG members in the winter semester. Members who attended that lunchtime session may wish to select another option.

1:25 to 2:15 p.m.-Workshop 2: Networking
Networking opportunities will continue to present themselves but identifying them as such and making the most of such opportunities can take practice. A facilitated networking session will provide DPMG members with an opportunity to discuss the important role that networking plays in career progression. The interactive session will include tips, techniques, and an opportunity to apply the strategies discussed during in the session. |
1:25 to 3:15 p.m.-Workshop 2 & 3 (DOUBLE SESSION): The Communication Conundrum: How Email, Text and Phone Calls Support Clarity, Efficiency and Strong Relationships
Effective communication directly impacts our ability to get things done, lighten our to-do list and, perhaps, find time to think, plan and organize. Yet emails pile up, phone calls go unanswered and text messages get scrambled. There's got to be a better way! This workshop will examine how our methods of communication impact our work and how small changes can make a big difference. Note: this is a double session that takes up a Workshop 2 and Workshop 3 space.

All have one thing in common – they want to improve their ability to communicate. Mary Jane has been profiled as a communications expert by the Wall Street Journal, National Post, The Globe & Mail, CBC, CTV, Global as well as other publications, television and radio outlets throughout North America. She recently published The Phone Book: Essential Telephone Communication Skills. |
2:25 to 3:15 p.m.-Workshop 3: Managing Change
Managing change is a daily routine for some and a rarity for others.  As employees of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥, we move through change both as individuals and also as part of an organization and community. As members of the »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ Professional Managerial Group, you are often in positions of leading and facilitating change within your departments as well as supporting your peers.  This session will introduce some basic change management theory which will increase your personal capacity to understand and move intentionally through change – both individually and organizationally. Furthermore, the group will be using past and present experiences as points of reflection and an opportunity to apply theory and learn.
»ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ the presenter: Verity Turpin is certified in change management using Prosci methodologies. She will be sharing some of her lessons learned, both in her professional and personal life. She will also be sharing some of her insights into the importance of understanding your personal process of moving through change and how it can impact others through your leadership style. |

This interactive session will introduce participants to the work of this new unit within Human Resources related to the university’s strategic priorities. Tracy will talk about Talent Management initiatives aimed at attracting, supporting, developing and retaining the best faculty and staff. You will have the opportunity to contribute to Dal’s Employer Branding Strategy by sharing ideas and brainstorming with your DPMG colleagues about what makes Dal a great place to work. There will also be a Q&A session to help you make the connection between the Talent Management strategy and your own work at Dal.

Have you ever found yourself providing information about an area on campus you've not yet visited? How comfortable do you feel when referring students, staff, and faculty members to a department outside your own? Depending on the nature of our roles, some members of DPMG might not have as much opportunity to interact with other units across campus. This guided campus tour will provide an opportunity to take a walk across campus and visit all the official stops as seen by our prospective students. |
