Changes to Student Success Centre Services

In-person and virtual appointments are available Monday–Friday, 8:30am–4:30pm

For all in-person appointments you must:

  • Pre-book your appointment
  • Pre-screen for COVID prior to arrival using the

Virtual appointments will be held via telephone, Microsoft Teams or another mutually agreed upon means of meeting remotely. 

Health Services will remain open Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays for the summer months by APPOINTMENT ONLY, 8:30am–4pm for currently enrolled »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ students. Please email or call for an appointment prior to coming to the department for care. MD visits will be scheduled by RN’s.

Health Services provides confidential assessments and referral services to students based on nursing assessments, provision of education, recommendation of appropriate care, provision of counselling services, evaluation of effectiveness of plans of care and referral to community resources.

Sexual health counselling

Physician non-insured services

Please be aware of fees for health services not covered by the Nova Scotia Health Insurance. This means you must pay for the following services provided by the campus doctor:

Missed appointments

$35

All missed appointments with a physician require a 24-hour cancellation notice. If 24-hour notice is not provided, Financial Services will be notified and your student account will be charged $35 for missing your doctor's appointment. Please be considerate of others who require appointments.

Missed appointments with Psychiatry and Psychological Services missed appointments will result in a $100–$150 charge.

Unpaid medical fees

Please be aware that unpaid medical fees will be added to your student account at Financial Services.

Elephant in the Room: mental health campaign


»ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ the campaign

Elephant in the Room is a national campaign designed to address the stigma associated with mental illness.

When you display a blue elephant figure, you show that you care about the wellness of others and demonstrate that this is a safe place to talk about mental illness, without  fear of being viewed differently.

When you see a blue elephant figure, you know where you are is a safe place to speak about any mental health issues you or your family may be having. You understand that you will be treated with respect and dignity and that you will find the support and understanding from a person who cares.

Student Success Centre/Health Services:

  • will educate students on what the campaign is and why we are providing this opportunity and support service to our students
  • will educate student leaders, faculty and staff on the campaign, what it means to provide this opportunity to the »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ Truro Campus, and provide the opportunity for volunteer champions
  • will be looking for champions to be the volunteers 

Champions:

  • will volunteer, become informed and commit to this important task
  • will volunteer and receive an information resource package on what it means to be a champion
  • will display the little blue elephant
  • will provide a safe place for students to talk about mental illness
  • will keep information that is shared confidential and private
  • will, when requested by the student or when necessary, refer students to (or make them aware of) the services available to them through Health Services on the Truro Campus and in the community
  • will NOT provide therapy or counselling

Nurse educators


Carolyn Bartlett

I joined Health Services at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ in 2014. I have over 30 years of nursing experience, working in healthcare in various positions: direct patient care obstetrics, surgery, critical care (Intensive Care, Coronary Care & Emergency). I have also managed the Intensive Care units and the Emergency Department locally for 10 years. Prior to coming to »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ I held the position of Director of Quality & Decision Support (Quality, Risk Management, Data Analysis, Infection Control) at Colchester East Hants Health Authority for seven years. I also have experience in research coordination, project management and as an educator for the Faculty of Nursing at St Francis Xavier University as well as »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥. I have also worked in forensic nursing at the Nova Scotia Medical Examiners Service.

In health care I'm always learning something new and am committed to ongoing education as new research emerges and changes in health care develop. Nurses have the opportunity to empower patients with knowledge. I  truly enjoy meeting students with diverse backgrounds from all walks of life and helping them with their health-care needs. As a nurse I try to advocate for my patients, challenge them, inspire them and provide the quality of care I would want if I was in their shoes.

Kristine Carr

I am a recent addition to the Health Services team, having joined in January 2019. My nursing career started in England over 40 years ago and has given me exposure to many services and specialties. Most recently I was the Health Services Manager for the Intensive Care and Dialysis Units at Colchester East Hants Health Centre.

I am enjoying the challenge of another career direction and am already learning a lot from the »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ students. Education should be a lifelong endeavour and I welcome this opportunity to build my own knowledge base and share my experience in healthcare in return. To be successful academically, you need to feel well physically and mentally. We are here to provide support and find any resources you may need to stay well so you are positioned for success.
