In Memoriam: Dr. Herbert Hancock

The Faculty of Engineering is saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Herbert Hancock, October 9, 2024, at the age of 96.

Dr. Hancock dedicated over 41 years to teaching and research within the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering at 黄色直播, serving both full-time and as Professor Emeritus. His journey began at the Nova Scotia Technical College, continued at the Technical University of Nova Scotia, and culminated at 黄色直播. Throughout his career, he explored a diverse number of research topics including the desulphurization of Nova Scotian coal, the corrosion of super-alloy turbine blades, and the recovery of metals from deep-sea nodules. However, it was his commitment to education and to his students that truly defined his legacy.

Dr. Hancock was known for his open-door policy, mentoring students well into the evenings, and making himself available for guidance and support. He played a vital role in establishing the first co-op degree program at TUNS, which provided valuable work experiences for countless Metallurgical students. His efforts even led to the creation of a student lounge and resource center, reflecting his dedication to enhancing the student experience.

A man with a brilliant mind and a remarkable character, Dr. Hancock lived life to the fullest, and on his own terms. .

A celebration of Dr. Hancock鈥檚 life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Dartmouth General Hospital, which provided exceptional care in Dr. Hancock鈥檚 later years.
