Instructor Position ‑ Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ invites applications for a limited-term position as an Instructor in Mineralogy and Petrology. The position is for three years, beginning 1st of July 2017. The successful applicant will teach both lectures and labs in ERTH 2001 (Mineralogy), and ERTH 2002 (Introduction to Petrology), plus two others, such as ERTH 2380 (Geochemistry) and one additional course, or equivalent. In consultation with the faculty members involved, the appointee will also contribute to the lab components of other Mineralogy- Petrology-related classes (e.g., ERTH 3010, ERTH 3020), and offer occasional lectures in those classes as the need arises. In addition, the appointee will coordinate and supervise teaching assistants for the above-mentioned courses, catalogue, maintain and update the second- and third-year Mineralogy and Petrology teaching collections, develop and implement experiential learning activities involving modern analytical meth! ods within the university and local community, supervise the use and maintenance of the teaching microscopes, and contribute to departmental committees and administration as appropriate to the position. The appointee will be encouraged to contribute to the supervision of honours students.

Minimum qualifications include an M.Sc. (or equivalent), PhD preferred, with expertise in mineralogy and petrology, extensive experience in characterising minerals and rocks in hand sample, in thin section, and in the field, and teaching experience in laboratory and classroom settings. The following additional qualifications are desirable: experience with reflected light microscopy, familiarity with database or cataloguing software, experience using X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe techniques for mineral identification and analysis, experience supervising student research projects in mineralogy and petrology, experience in mineralogy and petrology course development.
