Tigers Weekend Recap (October 4‑6)

The Tigers had a busy weekend with eight of the varsity teams seeing action in various tournaments, meets and regular season games. The weekend saw the Tigers in Ontario, Boston, Antigonish, as well as at home.

Women’s Hockey

The Tigers travelled to Moncton this past weekend to take part in a pre-season tournament at Université de Moncton. The weekend started with a matchup against Mount Allison University. The Tigers were unable to take it, losing the game 2-4. The team played the U19 Quebec team the following day, losing 0-6. The Tigers continued their losing streak that day with a 0-3 loss against Moncton. On Sunday, the Tigers put forth a great effort in a rematch against Mount Allison the following day, but eventually fell 5-4 in overtime.

»ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ plays their first game of the regular season on October 18 at StFX at 7pm.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team made the trip to Fredericton to participate in a pre-season tournament hosted by the University of New Brunswick. The Tigers played their first game of the weekend on Friday night against the hosts, winning 61-45. Tiger Robbi Daley led the way with 18 points. On Saturday, the Tigerslost to Laval 52-71. Daley led the team again with 16 points. The Tigers last game of the weekend was a hard loss to the University of Regina with a final score of 47-74. Tigers Tessa Stammberger and Courtney Thompson each had 14 points.

The Tigers play their next game against Carleton University as part of the Subway Centennial Tournament here at Dal October 18 at 8pm.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team had a hard start to the weekend with a loss to three-time defending national champion Carleton University, 92-47. The Tigers put in a solid effort in their second game of the weekend, beating UQAM 77-85 Saturday night. Tiger Devon Stedman led the way with 21 points. The Tigers closed out the weekend with a loss to cross-town rivals Saint Mary’s (87-67). SMU led from the beginning, scoring 49 points in the first two quarters, forcing the Tigers to try and tie it up for the remainder of the game.

The men’s team travels to Antigonish on October 18 to participate in a pre-season tournament hosted by StFX.

Men’s Hockey

The men’s hockey team travelled to Ontario and Boston over the weekend to take part in Northeastern University’s pre-season tournament.  The team had a hard weekend, losing all three of their games against Carleton University (3-7), the hosts Northeastern University (0-5) and University of Maine (1-5).

They play their last exhibition game of the season at Acadia October 11 at 7pm.next game October 28th at 7pm against UPEI.

Cross Country

The women’s cross country team participated in the »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥/Saint Mary’s Invitational at Point Pleasant Park this past Saturday. Tiger Ellen Chappell finished second with a time of 22:12.51 in the 6km run, just 13 seconds behind StFX’s Melissa Hardy. Eight universities participated in the meet with the Tigers claiming six spots in the top 10. Anna von Maltzahn finished third, followed by Britany MacArthur in fourth and Natalie Sachrajda in fifth. Rounding out the top 10 wereEmily Clarke (sixth) and Emily Ferguson (eighth)

The Tigers claimed their third team victory in a row and will head to Montreal next weekend to compete at the RSEQ Invitational this weekend.

The men’s cross country team also participated in the Invitational. The team had an even bigger upset with Tiger Matt McNeil taking second place with a time of 25:24.24 - just one second behind Saint Mary’s John Kuto in the 8km run. Also finishing in the top 10 were Oliver Hatheway in sixth, Bruce Russell in eighth and Matthias Mueller in ninth.

The men’s team finished second in the team standings and will also run in the RSEQ Invitational this weekend.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team (6-2-1) headed to Antigonish on Sunday to play StFX (3-4-3) at Oland Stadium. The girls rebounded from their loss to UPEI last weekend and took the game 3-0 over the X-Women. Elise Bilodeau put the Tigers on the board with the first goal of the game at the 32 minute mark.  Scarlet Smith scored her first goal as a Tiger, quickly followed by the Tigers final goal from Bianca Jakisa off a pass from Bilodeau.

The Tigers will enjoy a week off before heading to Newfoundland to play Memorial University the following weekend.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer team (4-3-2) was also Antigonish on Sunday and came away with a 2-1 win over the X-Men (4-3-3). With only minutes remaining in the first half, the scoreless game ended when midfielder Aaron Hoyle scored the Tigers first goal. StFX managed to tie it up at the 88 minute mark when »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ scored an own-goal off a throw-in by StFX defender Jamie Thibbo.Within seconds, the Tigers regained their lead with a goal from striker William Kafeero. StFX played rough, receiving 5 yellow cards and one red card to Serge Dossou, just minutes into the second half.

The Tigers are off this weekend and will head to Newfoundland the following weekend to take on the Sea-Hawks.
