Homecoming provided no shortage of action for Tigers fans as Dal’s sports teams were in action on campus over the weekend. The soccer teams battled it out against Acadia on Wickwire field while the women’s volleyball team hosted the annual Scotiabank Invitational in Dalplex. On the road the women’s hockey team played two exhibition games south of the border while men’s hockey faced UPEI in a preseason matchup in Liverpool, N.S.

Heavy rain blanketed Wickwire field early Saturday afternoon, but it didn’t impede the women’s performance as they looked to move up in the AUS rankings. Ashley Salvador buried the ball in the back of the net during the first half, only to have the Axewomen tie it up a minute later off a corner kick. The back and forth action continued throughout the match until Doriana Homerski scored in the 80th minute to give the Tigers a 2-1 victory.

Men’s Soccer
ACA 3 @ DAL 2

The men played a tough match on Saturday against AUS first place Acadia. During a lively first half the Axemen scored two back-to-back goals after an injury in Dal’s defensive line. A penalty kick scored by Nathan Rogers put the team on the board, but it was quickly offset by another Acadia goal before the end of the half. During the second half the black and gold defence managed to find their footing on the slick pitch and kept the opposition at bay. Through perseverance and hard work the Tigers created a number of opportunities, however they were only able to find the back of the net, resulting in a 3-2 loss.

Over the course of the weekend the women’s volleyball team hosted the annual Scotiabank Invitational at Dalplex. The Tigers demonstrated exciting potential, exceptional teamwork and with a 4-0 tournament record, displaying exceptional teamwork and skill in each match. With such strong play against a number of AUS opponents this early in the season, Dal has without doubt established itself as a top contender for this year’s AUS championship title. Congratulations to Louise Facca and Tara Gowan whose outstanding play had them named as tournament all-stars, as well as Maggie Li who was chosen as  the tournament MVP.

Women’s Hockey
DAL 1 @ U of New Hampshire 5; DAL 0 @ U of Maine 4

The women’s hockey team traveled to the United States this past weekend for exhibition matches against two NCAA Division 1 schools. The tough competition and high level of play allowed the women to prepare for the upcoming season which opens in a matchup against Saint Mary's on October 13th.

Men’s Hockey
DAL 3 @ UPEI 4

The Tigers faced the Panthers in a close exhibition game in Liverpool over the weekend. Dal had a strong showing on the ice despite falling just short of the victory away from home. This Thursday they host Saint Mary’s in an exhibition game at the Forum.
