The dance entrepreneur

Rebecca Chapman has managed to meld her two passions 鈥 Irish dance and entrepreneurship 鈥 into one awesome school project.

The Bachelor of Commerce student has opened her own business, Chapman School of Irish Dance, this summer.

And the endeavour is giving her a leg up, so to speak, when it comes to business acumen.

鈥淓very time something really good happens 鈥 somebody signs up, or I receive a compliment 鈥 it鈥檚 cool because I know it鈥檚 my hard work making that happen. It鈥檚 really rewarding,鈥 says Ms. Chapman, 21.

The Dartmouth resident enters her fourth year in the Commerce program, majoring in entrepreneurship, in September. She began studying Irish dance about 10 years ago.

Because Commerce functions as a co-op program, students spend three semesters in the workforce. And because Ms. Chapman is majoring in entrepreneurship, one of those terms must involve starting her own business.

鈥淭he reason I chose dance is because it鈥檚 something I like doing, I think it鈥檚 something I could actually do (as a career), and it fit well with doing it in the summer,鈥 she explains.

The school offers camps and classes in various forms of Irish dance 鈥 soft shoe, solo and group 鈥 to beginners ranging in age from preschoolers to adults.

While some Commerce students choose to keep their business going, Ms. Chapman started in late April and plans to wind down by mid-August. She handles the business end of the program 鈥 promotion, registration, logistics 鈥 from home and holds classes in various schools and community centres in Halifax and Dartmouth.

She considers herself fortunate to have received a $3,000 Sagewood Group Award to help fund the venture.

鈥淭hat made a big difference in how I approached it. I was able to take more risks and just do more, in general,鈥 says Chapman.

Still, there was a learning curve involved in establishing the Chapman School of Irish Dance鈥 from registering the business and advertising, to booking venues and hiring teaching assistants, to website development and budgeting.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an awesome learning experience and I think it鈥檚 going well. Before you get going, it sounds in your head like it鈥檚 all going to work so well. You have all of these lofty goals,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 definitely haven鈥檛 met all of my goals 鈥 particularly in the number of people I thought I would be teaching at this point 鈥 but I鈥檓 not disappointed, either.鈥

She meets with a Dal advisor every two weeks (more often if need be) and says she鈥檚 鈥渞eally impressed鈥 by how much support she鈥檚 gotten from other professors, department staff, friends and family members, and even other business people with whom she鈥檚 dealt.

鈥淚t was scary to start, but once you鈥檙e in it you feel good about it. It鈥檚 not as daunting as you would think it would be,鈥 says Ms. Chapman.
