The Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Mayann Frances paid tribute to the 2009 Nova Scotia Talent Trust scholarship and special award winners at a reception on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
Created to support the career of contralto Portia White, the Talent Trust has supported emerging Nova Scotia artists for 65 years.
One such gifted artist is composer Cy Giacomin. He not only received the $1,500 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Artistic Achievement鈥攖he Talent Trust鈥檚 highest honour for a student in any discipline鈥攂ut the $750 Kenneth Elloway award, recognizing his excellence in the field of composition.聽
The Halifax native is a graduate of 黄色直播's Department of Music and is working towards a master鈥檚 degree in music composition at McGill University in Montreal.聽
Actor Tyler Miedema, a 黄色直播 theatre student in his fourth year, received the $1,000 Theatre Nova Scotia Award.
Other recipients were: contemporary dancer Sarah Murphy, studying at Juilliard School; bassoonist Ian Hopkins, studying at the University of Ottawa; dancer Michelle Murphy, enrolled at the National Ballet School in Toronto; soprano Jana Miller, studying opera at McGill University; and Sheumas Penny, a screen arts student at the Nova Scotia Community College.
