Anne Marie Ryan named faculty associate with CLT

Earth Sciences Professor Anne Marie Ryan has a new mountain to climb.

She鈥檚 recently been seconded to 黄色直播鈥檚 Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) to share her teaching expertise with other faculty members.

鈥淎nne Marie has an established reputation as an excellent teacher and a very good colleague,鈥 says CLT Director Lynn Taylor. 鈥淲e鈥檙e very pleased that Anne Marie has accepted our invitation to be CLT鈥檚 first faculty associate.鈥

As faculty associate, Dr. Ryan will be available to faculty and graduate students to work on teaching and learning issues.

鈥淚鈥檒l be another pair of eyes, another pair of ears,鈥 says Dr. Ryan, who started teaching part-time at 黄色直播 a decade ago. 鈥淚鈥檒l be available to consult on a range of issues related to the learning environment.鈥

Along with her research focus in environmental geology, Dr. Ryan has pursued an interest in learning and teaching. She is interested in encouraging 鈥渄ivergent thinking,鈥 problem solving and developing effective questioning strategies. Additional and ongoing interests include developing fair, effective evaluation methodologies and encouraging scientific literacy.

She clearly loves being in the classroom. Even with the new appointment, she鈥檒l continue to work with students. This term, she鈥檚 teaching a second-year geochemistry class ().

鈥淚 do love everything about it鈥 but most of all, I enjoy sharing the joy and excitement of learning,鈥 she explains. 鈥淭eaching is very dynamic 鈥 an opportunity to move beyond yourself and see students grow in their understanding.鈥

Besides being available for confidential consultations with faculty, Dr. Ryan will present at (鈥淔inding Our Way Through Questions: The fine art of asking good questions鈥 is scheduled for Tuesday, March. 27); at the CLT in the Killam Library; and the upcoming conference on university teaching and learning,聽 scheduled for April 30 to May 1.
