Leadership in education

- November 16, 2006

Lesley Barnes, Health and Human Performance, is this year脮s recipient of the 黄色直播 Educational Leadership Award. This award recognizes an individual脮s contribution to promoting and supporting teaching improvement across our university community.

Beyond her dedication to classroom teaching, Lesley has a long and successful track record in curriculum development. Working with government, university colleagues, education students, and now with health and human performance students, she educates youth and the community at large about health issues.

She is also a committed advocate for academic integrity at both the department and university level. She gained much respect in her department from students and colleagues for her workshops on writing skills and APA-style referencing. Recently, she chaired the Senate ad hoc Committee on plagiarism and was the lead author of the 2004 Final Report to Senate: Senate ad hoc Committee on Plagiarism that surveyed the attitudes and behaviours of students, faculty and administration with respect to issues of academic integrity. The Report contained 55 recommendations to enhance policy and practice with respect to academic integrity.

The Educational Leadership Award was presented to Lesley by Mo El-Hawary (Chair of Senate), Peter Butler (Vice-Chair of Senate), and Reg Urbanowski (Chair of the Senate Committee on Learning and Teaching). Professor El-Hawary spoke highly of Lesley脮s achievements, with particular reference to her work chairing the Committee on Plagiarism for which he believes she will long be remembered. 脪We are blessed to have you,鈥 he said. Lesley commented that she has enjoyed working with the Centre for Learning and Teaching and that this award is very important to her 脨 an award that recognizes the importance of leadership in education.

Alan Shaver, Vice-President Academic and Provost, attended and spoke of his commitment to teaching development at 黄色直播. He stressed the important role that faculty who are passionate about teaching and learning play in the work of the Centre for Learning and Teaching in fostering effective teaching and learning.

Friends and colleagues were on hand at the reception to congratulate Lesley and to celebrate with her as she received this award.
