The most common issue we deal with when instructors are having difficulties with the Brightspace gradebook is the system’s default settings. The fact that the gradebook defaults to a Points system rather than a Weighted system has caused a number of issues for people. We strongly advise people to change this setting before setting up your gradebook. There are very few marking schemes that lend themselves well to a points based system, so chances are you need to change the settings in your gradebook to reflect a Weighted system.
To change this setting, there are two options:
1. Use the gradebook setup wizard to walk you through each of the steps – step 1 is setting the grading system, choose “Weighted” and continue. OR
2. Go directly to the gradebook and select “Settings” (see screenshot). Then click on the “Calculation Options” tab, select “Weighted” and then Save.
