The trend of the climate-unfriendly characteristic of deep learning is exponential; the computational resources required to train a best-in-class deep learning model double every 3.4 months. Sustainable AI aims to optimize resource utilization used by deep learning models without compromising the models' accuracy. In this talk, Tushar will explore the critical challenges in this domain, their significance, and current research efforts. He will present insights from his lab's studies and conclude by discussing a blueprint of potential improvements targeting the energy efficiency of AI models and the importance of cross-domain collaboration.

Tushar Sharma is a tenure-track assistant professor at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥, Canada. He leads the Software Maintenance and Analytics Research Team (SMART) lab in the Faculty of Computer Science. Topics related to software quality, sustainable artificial intelligence, and machine learning for software engineering (ML4SE) define his career interests. He earned a PhD from the Athens University of Economics and Business, Athens, Greece, specializing in software engineering in 2019. He has ten years of industry experience, mainly with Siemens Research, USA and India. He co-authored Refactoring for Software Design Smells: Managing Technical Debt and two Oracle Java certification books. He founded Designite, offering code quality assessment tools that many practitioners and researchers use worldwide. He is an IEEE Senior Member.
Thu, 16 Jan 2025 16:00:00 GMT /faculty/agriculture/news-events/events/2025/01/16/visiting_speaker_series__let_s_make_ai_green_er___challenges_and_opportunities.html 2025-01-16T16:00:00Z
