Horizon Europe Newsletter

Horizon Europe will publish quarterly newsletters which will provide key updates on Canada’s association to HE. The newsletters will include important programme updates, stories from successful HE proposals, details on upcoming HE webinars and events, and other programmer news that may be of interest to Canada’s science, research, and innovation community.

Highlights and updates:

Canada’s association to Horizon Europe: In late 2023, the Government of Canada concluded substantive negotiations with the European Commission to associate to Horizon Europe Pillar 2. While signature and implementation are underway, Canadians can apply now to the programme as members of consortia.

At this time, ISED is advising that researchers in Canada join consortia led by European partners, rather than lead projects from Canadian institutions.

Canada’s involvement in Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe: Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe – Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness – is divided into six thematic clusters, each of which tackles a specific horizontal societal issue and includes policy objectives that are reflected in each cluster’s activities. The Government of Canada establishes National Contact Points (NCPs): The Government of Canada has established National Contact Points (NCPs) to provide expert and technical guidance, practical information, and assistance for those interested in participating in Pillar 2. Currently, there is at least one NCP for each of the six clusters in Pillar 2. Contact information for NCPs is available

Release of the second Horizon Europe Strategic Plan 2025-2027: The European Commission recently released the Horizon Europe Strategic Plan 2025-2027. These work programmes will focus on three areas: green transition, digital transition, and a more resilient, competitive, inclusive and democratic Europe.

New Horizon Europe funding calls: The European Commission announced the launch of new funding calls in three clusters:

Cluster 1 – Health – worth over €185 million: these projects address anti-microbial resistance, pandemic preparedness, non-communicable diseases, and pre-commercial procurement for health and care systems.

Cluster 4 – Digital, Industry, and Space work programme – worth over €112 million: these projects are aimed primarily at pioneering projects in artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technologies.

Cluster 5 – Climate Action, Energy and Mobility work programme – worth €163.5 million: these projects address cross-cultural solutions for the climate transition, as well as safe, resilient transport and smart mobility services for passengers and goods.

Cluster 6 – Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment work programmeÌý – worth €63 million: these projects focus on sustainable, healthy and fair food systems, fighting climate change, and agriculture.

As part of the updated Horizon Europe 2023-2025 work programme, the European Commission has launched three new calls for proposals under the Adaptation to Climate Change and Restore our oceans and water by 2030 Horizon Europe Missions. A total of €233.7 million in EU funding is available under these calls with an application deadline of September 18, 2024.
