ACENET

Posted by Jaq-Lin Larder on May 11, 2020 in Events

ACENETÌýprovides advanced research computing resources, expertise, consulting and training to post-secondary researchers, students and collaborators throughout AtlanticÌýCanada. Advanced computing entails computationally and/or data intesnive work that is beyond the capabilities of a desktop, including high performance, big data and GPUÌýcomputing. It also includes developing cloud-based platforms and portals for research communities, storage and large-scale file transfer.

The following training sessions areÌýavailableÌýto researchers and studentsÌýacross all disciplines, as well as industry innovators.ÌýPlease register prior to the sessions at the links below or on theÌýACENET training page.Ìý

ACENET BASICS

Introduction to ACENET & Compute Canada
What is high performance computing (HPC) and what can it do for me? How canÌýACENET help? Used by researchers across many disciplines to tackleÌýanalyses tooÌýlarge or complex for a desktop, or to achieve improved efficiency over aÌýdesktop, this session takes participants through the preliminary stages ofÌýlearning about HPC and computing clusters, and how to get started with thisÌýtype of computing.
19 May, 10:30-11:30am Atlantic
21 May, 1:00-2:00pm Atlantic

Introduction to Linux
In this session, learn how to get started with Linux, how to create andÌýnavigate directories for your data, load files, manage your storage, runÌýprograms on theÌýcomputing clusters, and set file permissions.Ìý
20 May, 10:30-11:30am Atlantic
21 May, 2:30-3:30pm Atlantic

Introduction to Shell Scripting
Participants will learn how to use shell scripting to exercise the power of theÌýcommand line. Shell scripting helps you save time, automate file managementÌýtasks, and better use Linux. This session teaches you how to name, locate andÌýset permissions for executable files, taking input and producing output.
21 May, 10:30-11:30am Atlantic
22 May, 1:00-2:00pm Atlantic

Job Scheduling With Slurm
This session teaches participants how to use Compute Canada's queuingÌýenvironment on the national systems using the job scheduler Slurm.

ACENET PARALLEL COMPUTING SCHOOL

This school seeks to educate participantsÌýin some tools and techniques used in high-performance computing and scientificÌýcomputation. Topics will includeÌýgeneral parallel computing, Dask, MachineÌýLearning by example, OpenMP, GPGPU, and Message Passing InterfaceÌý(MPI). Each two-hour session will include aÌýlecture and learning exercises.ÌýParticipants will be provided take-home exercises to prepare for the nextÌýsession. Between sessions, online office hours will beÌýprovided for extraÌýhelp.Ìý

The course is aimed at researchers and innovators, both academic andÌýindustrial.Ìý

Participants must have familiarity with the Unix command line, suchÌýas oneÌýmight have on completion of the ACENET Basics series, and some level ofÌýprogramming experience. Participants must also have a Compute CanadaÌýaccount.Ìý

2 June-9 July, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00-4:00pm AtlanticÌý
