Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) was established on June 1st, 2015, merging the mandate and functions of the Canadian Polar Commission (CPC) and the science & technology program of the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) into a new Government of Canada Agency. Polar Knowledge Canada will advance knowledge of the Polar regions and strengthen Canadian leadership in polar science and technology by supporting world-class leading-edge research and facilitating linkages between key stakeholders for enhanced coordination. Â
Polar Knowledge Canada will continue to establish and develop international partnerships and will be in a position to expand our science and technology program through the world-class Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) presently under construction in Cambridge Bay. The station will open in 2017, and will complement existing scientific facilities distributed across Canada’s North. CHARS will host international researchers, including Antarctic experts, and provide an opportunity to leverage resources, research infrastructure and polar expertise, and enhance scientific research and knowledge in the Polar regions.
